The St. Croix Sacred Ensemble (SCSE) began its musical evolution more than 20 years ago as The Matin Singers, a church choir based out of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota
The group became non-denominational shortly after 2003 to serve a broader audience. The name St. Croix Sacred Ensemble was adopted by its members in 2012.
St. Croix Sacred Ensemble is an independent, liturgical choir. We believe that sacred music is powerful and uplifting. We share a passion for creating a community through music, and strive to convey God's grace, love, and light by sharing our gifts with others.
As a group of dedicated singers, the focus has always been on offering a varied repertoire of the highest quality choral music, from liturgical chants to world music. A cappella choir music is one of the choir’s musical specialties. Our music making is offered to lift the spirit, to voice profound sacred thoughts and words, and to inspire the imagination of singers and listeners alike.
Our choir members come from western Wisconsin, the St Croix Valley and the Twin Cities metro area. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings at 7pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bayport, Minnesota
The new Artistic Director for the St. Croix Sacred Ensemble is Deborah Fristad of Hudson, Wi. Deborah takes on the leadership of the Ensemble with a wealth of experience developed over a lifetime of work as a church musician, performer, and teacher of music. Deborah was raised in the St. Croix Valley, but moved away after attending college at St. Catherine University and completing a Masters in Music at the Ohio State University. She returned to the beautiful St. Croix Valley in 2013 and immersed herself in the cultural offerings.
Over the years she has held church music leadership positions as an organist, pianist, and choir conductor in Ohio, California, Michigan and Wisconsin as well as England. She delights in finding great music which helps illuminate the biblical text and themes of the worship service in ways which touch the heart and mind and move the spirit.
Deborah is currently employed as an Associate Lecturer in the Music Department at UW-River Falls where she conducts the University Community Chorus, teaches vocal pedagogy/choral literature classes, and teaches piano to music education majors. She frequently guest conducts choirs around the state.
Throughout her career, she has been actively involved with several professional organizations including the National Association for Music Education in which she currently serves the state level Wisconsin Music Education Association on the council as the Choral Consultant. She is a Past President of the Michigan chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. She also served on the Board of Trustees for the professional Eisenhower Dance company based in Rochester, Michigan.
The choir is open to a variety of singing venues. If you are interested in auditioning for the choir, or would like to contact us for more information on booking a performance, click the envelope icon below or visit the Contact page.
